There comes a time when we have to draw a line, close a door, and cut the cords that keep us bound to someone who no longer serves our highest good. Whether it’s an ex, a toxic friend, or someone whose energy just keeps circling back, the work of unbinding is powerful and necessary.
In Hoodoo tradition, this isn’t just about “banishing” someone—it’s about clearing space so you can walk in freedom, sweetness, and protection. Think of it like tending your home: you sweep out the dirt, bless the space, and lock the doors behind you.
Here’s the full step-by-step ritual process I recommend when you’re ready to truly remove someone from your life.
1. Cleansing & Preparation
Before you begin, cleanse yourself and your space. Wash your hands and face with salt water to strip away lingering energy. Light some incense (sage, frankincense, myrrh, or camphor) to open the way.
Pray aloud:
“I cleanse this space. No harm may linger here.
What is heavy, be lifted. What is bound, be broken.”
2. The Unbinding (Banishing the Ties)
You’ll need: black candle, white candle, paper, string, vinegar, salt.
Write their name 9 times on the paper. Cross it with:
“I cut you out of my life. You hold no power here.”
Fold the paper away from you, bind it with black string.
Place it between the candles and recite Psalm 37, which speaks of the wicked being cut down.
Cut the string with scissors, saying:
“By flame and spirit, I sever all ties.
Our paths divide. You hold no power over me.”
Place the paper in vinegar and salt (to sour and banish) or burn it to ash. Dispose of it far from home.
Let the black candle burn all the way down to clear their energy.
3. The Sweetening (Calling in Peace & Love)
When one door closes, you want the right ones to open. Sweetening work draws peace, love, and goodness into your life.
You’ll need: honey or sugar jar, cinnamon, basil, lavender, white candle.
Write your own name 9 times on a fresh slip of paper. Cross it with:
“I draw sweetness, peace, and love into my life.”
Place it in the jar with herbs.
Seal it and place a white candle on top.
As it burns, recite Psalm 23:
“The Lord is my shepherd… Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
Keep the jar on your altar, bedside, or somewhere safe. Light candles on it whenever you want to refresh the sweetness.
4. The Protection (Mojo Bag for Strength)
After cutting and sweetening, you need armor. A mojo bag keeps you shielded.
You’ll need: red flannel bag, angelica root, rue, bay leaf, black salt, crystal, tobacco or sage, and something personal (like hair or nail clipping).
Place your personal item in the bag first.
Add herbs one by one, speaking their power aloud:
“Angelica, guard me.”
“Rue, turn away all evil.”
“Bay leaf, give me strength.”
“Black salt, drive away harm.”
Add the crystal and tobacco.
Blow three breaths into the bag to awaken it.
Tie three knots and pray:
“Tied, bound, and sealed.
My spirit is protected, my path is revealed.”
Feed it weekly with whiskey, Florida Water, or Protection Oil. Carry it close.
5. The Sealing (Protecting Your Home)
Finally, lock down your house so no stray energy sneaks back in.
You’ll need: water, salt, vinegar, herbs (rosemary, basil, bay leaf), Florida Water, white candle.
Boil herbs into a tea. Strain and pour into your wash bucket with salt, vinegar, and Florida Water.
Wash floors from back to front of the house. If no floors, wipe doors and windows.
Recite Psalm 91 as you clean:
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty…”
Dispose of the wash water outside, away from home. Don’t look back.
Light a white candle by the front door to seal your home in peace.
6. Daily Renewal
Every morning, speak this affirmation to keep your energy fresh:
“I rise in light, I rise in strength.
No cord binds me, no shadow clings.
My spirit is shielded, my path is clear.
Only love, peace, and blessings draw near.”
Touch your mojo bag or dab Florida Water as you say it. At night, give thanks for the sweetness and protection you’ve received.
With this full cycle, you are:
Cutting what no longer serves.
Drawing what blesses and strengthens.
Protecting yourself and your home.
This isn’t just a spell—it’s a reclaiming of your power, a declaration that you are free, loved, and shielded.
